The Legal Pluralism Lab is envisioned as a self-organized space by CLP members to test new ideas, forge cross-regional and cross-topical networks and collaborations, and experiment with new formats of knowledge-sharing and learning. Complementing the CLP’s regular conferences and summer schools, the Legal Pluralism Lab offers a more informal space to join a wide-ranging network of scholars working on legal pluralism. It is an opportunity to get to know each other, and to present and discuss research ideas beyond the confines of one’s own situated academic networks and communities.
The Lab will consist of a series of online events. Each event will be organized by a different team of CLP members who submit a proposal for a topic and speakers, and act as conveners of their session.

Potential topics and ideas for such sessions could include:
•    Legal pluralism and… (migration, digitalization, securitization, etc.)
•    Comparing and discussing syllabi and experiences of teaching legal pluralism
•    Co-hosted events with regional legal pluralism or law & society networks
•    Discussion of books on legal pluralism, book launches, and manuscripts
•    Legal pluralism in practice: legal practitioners’ experiences of legal pluralism
Ideally, each event will bring together speakers from different regional and academic contexts, career stages, and professional backgrounds. It is up to the conveners to find a suitable time and language for their session. Events can be organized as lectures, workshops for research ideas or draft articles, world cafés, book discussions, or in any other format as decided by the conveners.
If you are interested in participating in this initiative, please join us for our inaugural meeting, during which we hope to further define the format, establish some ground rules for the Lab, and begin planning activities for 2025/26.

To help us organize this meeting, we kindly ask you to send us a short statement outlining your interest in legal pluralism and the kinds of topics you would like to see included in the Legal Pluralism Lab. If you already have concrete suggestions for a session you would like to convene, please share some details (potential time/date, special format, who could or should be involved, and whether you need support inviting Commission members or other scholars). If the time does not work for you, you can still send a proposal.

If you are not a member, you are still welcome to join.

Please send your statement of interest to Reetta Toivanen <reetta.toivanen@helsinki.fi>.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
